Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement at JLR’s BAC and EPMC

One of the biggest pitfalls of typical corporate suggestion boxes is the "black hole" effect—where an idea is submitted and never heard of again. R&H has explicitly designed this scheme to be completely transparent.

In modern manufacturing, competitive advantage is no longer defined purely by machinery, automation or scale. Increasingly, it is defined by something far more powerful: the collective intelligence of the workforce.

At Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), that principle is being brought to life by Rudolph & Hellmann, through the launch of a structured Ideas Scheme across key manufacturing sites — designed to unlock continuous improvement, operational efficiency and frontline innovation at scale.

The programme reflects a simple but powerful belief: the people closest to the process are often best placed to improve it.

Designed to empower every single team member, the scheme extends equally to full-time R&H employees and agency workers. The core philosophy is straightforward: if you see a way to make a process better, safer, or more efficient, we want to hear it, evaluate it, and reward it.

A Staggered Rollout Supporting JLR’s Next-Gen Fleet

To ensure maximum focus and a smooth implementation process, the Ideas Scheme is being introduced across two of JLR’s flagship operations on a structured timeline:

  • Phase 1: The Battery Assembly Centre (BAC) – June 2026 Fresh off the back of celebrating the historic milestone of building 100,000 batteries, the BAC team will be the first to pilot the live scheme. This launch leverages the immense pride and collaborative momentum already thriving on the BAC shop floor.
  • Phase 2: The Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) – August 2026 Following the initial rollout, the scheme will expand to the EPMC facility. Backed by an impeccable onsite safety culture, the team here will bring their specialised operational knowledge to the innovation pipeline.

What Kind of Ideas Are We Looking For?

The scheme isn’t looking for complex corporate overhauls; it is focused on practical, actionable changes that yield a measurable impact. Submissions are centred around four key pillars:

  • Efficiency Improvements: Streamlining a workflow, reducing waste material, eliminating empty handling steps, or optimising part placement.
  • Safety Enhancements: Finding a smarter way to mitigate a physical risk, improving cleanroom ergonomics, or making heavy part handling even more secure.
  • Operational Innovation: Utilising existing warehouse management tech in a smarter way or refining the line-side delivery sequence.
  • Measurable Business Benefits: Any change that saves time, cuts unexpected costs, or elevates the service delivery we guarantee to JLR.

Transparency, Recognition, and Real Rewards

One of the biggest pitfalls of typical corporate suggestion boxes is the “black hole” effect—where an idea is submitted and never heard of again. R&H has explicitly designed this scheme to be completely transparent.

Once an idea is submitted via the simple online form, the submitter receives clear email updates at every single stage, ensuring they are always kept in the loop.

Innovation is a valuable commodity and successful ideas will be celebrated accordingly. When an idea is approved and rolled out onto the facility floor, the individual or team responsible earns physical rewards, including vouchers, alongside widespread operational recognition across the business. Even if an idea cannot be implemented immediately, it is archived for future reference, protecting the submitter’s intellectual contribution if conditions change later down the line.

Living the “Home Grown Timber” Way

By opening this scheme to everyone—including agency staff—R&H is dismantling traditional workplace hierarchies and proving that great operational design can come from anywhere.

The future of advanced automotive logistics isn’t just built on advanced robotics or automated lines; it is built on a culture of continuous improvement and deep employee involvement. As the June launch at the BAC approaches, the R&H leadership team looks forward to seeing the ingenuity, sharp thinking and collaborative drive that our teams will bring to the table.
